Learning Spanish is becoming more and more popular. High School classrooms and community centers everywhere are full of Spanish classes. There are also hundreds of Spanish teaching sites online that promise to teach you Spanish in the car or while you work or even teach you Spanish while you sleep! People want to know what is the best way to learn Spanish.   The real challenge is deciding which Spanish learning program will work best for you and your needs.

Here are some things you should consider no matter what program you go with:

We all have different tendencies when it comes to learning. Educators have created different categories of learning styles. Some of us learn by hearing or listening to things. This is called audio. Others learn more quickly by watching things and are called visual learners. Finally, there is a group of people that learn best by doing things and they are called kinesthetic learners. You are going to want to pick a Spanish program that gives you some variety of methods, particularly if you don’t know what type of learner you are. This is true for learning anything.  If you know what type of learner you are then you can focus on programs that offer your style of learning.  However, educators are increasingly finding that most people learn the best when all three styles of learning are in play.  So it’s good to go with a program that stimulates all of our learning centers.

Getting back to Spanish learning,  you will want to have your Spanish course on audio.  That’s a given.  To learn any language it is a good idea to be able to take the course with you wherever you go. Learning Spanish or any language for that matter should feel a little more like play than work.  Relaxed minds learn faster just like relaxed muscles work better in athletics.  Tension is bad not matter what so look for a realxing , fun way to learn.

Having said that, keep in mind that we want to learn Spanish correctly.   So its very important to learn form a native Spanish speaker. It’s really, the only way you can develop the proper accents and inflexions in your voice that are appropriate for Spanish.  Otherwise you are getting someone’s interpretation of what the language should sound like.  If you’ve even seen a movie where someone has bad southern accent or British accent you know what we mean.  They are really just faking it.  So try and learn from a native speaker.

You shouldn’t go wrong if you use the above criteria in selecting a Spanish course for yourself or your family. Don’t forget that everyone learns in different ways so you need some flexibility in your approach to learning Spanish.
